How to Release African Music to U.S. DJs: Clean Versions, DJ Edits and EPK Requirements
What does an African release need before U.S. DJ servicing?
Quick Answer
Files, not links: WAV or 320 for every version. A clean version for anything beyond the club. Extended intros and DJ edits so the record mixes. A one page EPK with the genre named precisely and a contact who answers within a day.
Most African releases that go nowhere in the U.S. do not fail on the music. They fail on logistics: the mixshow DJ who never got a clean version, the club DJ who got a streaming link instead of a file, the selector who liked the record and could not find out who to reply to. This is the checklist that prevents that.
Audio, Clean Versions and Edits
WAV or 320kbps MP3 for every version. American DJs play from files; a Spotify link is a listening suggestion, not a serviceable record. The clean version is the whole ballgame for anything beyond the club: mixshow and radio play requires one, full stop, and a surprising number of strong African releases arrive without it. If the lyric needs no edit, say so explicitly, because a DJ will not assume it.
A record that opens cold on a vocal is hard to mix. An extended intro, eight or sixteen bars of instrumental runway, is cheap to make and measurably raises plays. For dance records, amapiano and Afro-house especially, the extended mix is the primary asset. Instrumentals and acapellas earn blends, and blends are how a new record sneaks into a cautious set.
The EPK
One page. Who the artist is in two sentences, what the record is, the release date, the genre named precisely, gengetone is not Afrobeats and a DJ who knows the difference is exactly the DJ you want, plus links and a contact who answers within a day. Photos help; a ten page biography does not.
Delivery and Follow-Up
Service files securely in the formats above, then follow up once the dust settles: who tried it, in what room, what happened. That feedback is the cheapest market research a label can get, and a campaign that skips it has thrown away half of what it paid for. All of this is the standing intake for a Digiwaxx Africa campaign; the Africa hub lists every market funnel and takes requests directly.
