Mixshow vs. Rotation: How Radio Airplay Really Works
What is the difference between mixshow play and rotation?
Quick Answer
A mixshow is a DJ-curated block, usually nights and weekends, where the DJ chooses the records. Rotation is the station’s programmed playlist, where a programmer chooses them. Mixshow is the tryout; rotation is the contract. Records earn the second by proving reaction in the first, and in the clubs the same DJs play.
Digiwaxx has serviced mixshow DJs since 1998, and the confusion never changes: an artist hears their record on the radio at midnight on a Saturday and expects to hear it at 3pm on a Tuesday. Those are two different systems with two different gatekeepers, and understanding the handoff between them is most of understanding radio.
What a Mixshow Is
The mixshow is the part of the broadcast the station hands to a DJ: a live or pre-recorded mix, blended like a club set, where new records get their first spins on air. Mixshow DJs are usually also club DJs, which is the whole point, they arrive at the station already knowing what rooms react to. That makes them the single most efficient audience for a new record: one person who can put your song both on a floor on Friday and on the air on Saturday.
How Spins Get Counted
Airplay is not self-reported. Monitoring services like Mediabase and Luminate fingerprint broadcast audio around the clock and log every detected play, which is where airplay charts come from. A mixshow spin is a real, detected, charted spin. This is also why a clean version is non-negotiable: a record that cannot legally air never enters the count, no matter how much the DJ likes it.
How Records Graduate
Program directors add records to rotation when the risk is gone, and mixshow reaction is one of the main ways risk disappears: requests after a mixshow spin, floors reacting in the club, other stations’ mixshows picking it up. No servicing company can promise rotation, and you should walk away from any that does. What servicing actually does is put the record in front of the mixshow DJs with the right versions, so the tryout can happen at all. The graduation is earned by the record.
